My big boy is turning five. I think I’m in denial. When my friends had kids, I felt like their kids weren’t babies anymore once they turned five. I’m not ready for that. I still see him as the baby I would lie on the grass with, and he would try to stick his fingers in my nose. We would do raspberries at each other.
It’s not that the baby years are any less precious with the other two babies. I just have more vivid memories of my first, because I had so much time, attention, and brain space to dedicate to just him back then. And this is just my first time having a child turn five.
My big guy is really beyond his years, which brings with it great conversation, and a few challenges. So, instead of thinking, “Wow, he’s old now!” in our house, we have to keep reminding ourselves, “He’s only five.” Thank heaven.
This birthday celebrates a milestone in his life, but I will focus on doing things little five year olds like to do instead of letting him always be the adult he wants to be.
My love, you are a wonderful kid and will do great things. Now, let’s have some fun!
